Hungarian flavors

Hungarian flavours in a third-wave Budapest café.

We are a new trendy Budapest café and bar next to the Parliament, where international coffee culture and Hungarian gastronomy naturally meet.

In addition to specialty coffee and modern brunch, a good homemade goulash soup is just as natural as carefully selected Hungarian wines.

Budapest coffee house culture — today.

Budapest's coffeehouse culture is world-famous — but what's really interesting is not the past, but how this tradition lives on today. The spirit of the great coffeehouses of the turn of the century — the long conversations, the slow afternoons, the meeting place — returns in a new form in the city's specialty cafes, which combine the classic coffeehouse atmosphere with the sophistication of modern coffee culture.

Smúz is part of this new wave. We are not trying to copy the old big coffee houses, but we are carrying on the same basic idea: creating a place where it is worth sitting, spending time, and talking — only now complemented by the natural meeting of carefully brewed specialty coffee and Hungarian flavors.

The proximity to the Parliament, the relaxed terrace atmosphere, and the attentive service all serve this experience: not a rushed tourist café, but a place you'll want to return to.

While writers and thinkers used to sit for hours over a black coffee in the old coffee houses, today our terraces are more populated by freelancers using laptops, chatting friends, and visitors exploring the city — but the basic experience is the same: time, space, and good coffee to stop for a moment.

Hungarian classics on our menu.

In addition to international brunch dishes, our menu also includes two true Hungarian classics: traditional goulash soup and chicken paprikash — both of which are prepared daily, based on homemade recipes.

Craving something sweet? Homemade apple strudel with fresh vanilla ice cream is one of the most beloved pieces of Hungarian confectionery tradition.

Hungarian wines from several regions.

In addition to international items, our wine list features the best of Hungarian wine regions: dry and sweet wines from the Holdvölgy winery in Tokaj (including a classic Szamorodni), Heimann Merlot from Szekszárd, and Kreinbacher sparkling wine from Somló.

If you prefer a stronger drink, we also offer Unicum and domestic pálinka — from sour cherry to peach.

Hospitality and the experience of a shared table.

The essence of Hungarian hospitality is that a meal is rarely just a meal — it’s more of an opportunity to spend time together. This attitude is also felt on the terrace of Smúz: goulash soup or chicken paprikash are not quick bites, but dishes worth eating slowly, with conversation, just as we would do at home.

Many of our guests say they spend longer with us than they originally planned — and that's exactly what we strive for. Our goal is not to serve you as quickly as possible, but to give you time to sit down, taste, and experience the true Budapest atmosphere, whether over a coffee or a glass of Hungarian wine.

If you arrive in a group, the goulash soup and chicken paprikash are great to share — just like you would at a Hungarian family table. The view of the Parliament from our terrace also adds to this experience — not a rush, but a moment to pause, where conversation is at least as important as the food.

A mini guide for first-timers: how to taste Hungarian flavours with us.

If you’re visiting for the first time and are curious about Hungarian flavors, here’s a simple suggestion. Start with a specialty coffee to get you in the mood, then try the goulash soup or chicken paprikash — both are perfect, no-frills introductions to Hungarian cuisine.

A glass of Hungarian wine — either from Holdvölgy in Tokaj or Heimann in Szekszárd — goes well with both courses, and is also a good opportunity to ask our waiters about the wine regions. To finish, the apple strudel with fresh vanilla soda is the best choice.

There's no need to rush: sit on our terrace, enjoy the proximity of the Parliament, and let the experience unfold on its own. If you can, choose the early afternoon hours — then the terrace is quieter and our waiters have more time to talk in detail about the wines and dishes.

If you're after more Budapest experiences, see what we have for the rest of the day too.
