How the official Budapest Coffee Week Daytime Party went at Smúz

On the last Saturday of September, for one afternoon on Kossuth Square everything revolved around coffee, oysters and music: Smúz hosted the official Daytime Party of Budapest Coffee Week. Five hours, a terrace full of people and a vibe we’re still talking about.
For a whole week all of Budapest revolved around coffee, and our job was to turn that buzz into a sunny afternoon. At two o’clock the music started and from then on there was no stopping: free entry, the shade of the plane trees, the Parliament in the background and a terrace where friends and complete strangers sat at the same table.

DJ BenKane was in charge of the vibe, and he knew exactly what a September Saturday afternoon calls for. For five hours sunshine-ready sets played across the terrace and inside the café – music you can chat over, but after a while your feet start moving too.

An oyster with every drink
That was the big promise of the afternoon, and we kept it: every drink came with a fresh oyster. The oysters came from Saltz, on a bed of ice with lemon – and there was a crowd around the trays all afternoon. First-timers tried their first oyster here; fans usually came back for a second drink.

Bubbles or cold beer?
There were two right ways to go with the oysters. Fans of the classic pairing chose the cold bubbles of Serena Prosecco – DOC Treviso, straight from the ice bucket. Beer lovers went for NOAM Lager, which didn’t just drop by for the day: it’s now on our drinks menu as a new addition.

In Hungarian, in English and every other way
The best part, though, was the crowd. Hungarian and English filled the terrace at the same time: regulars, coffee professionals, locals doing the rounds of the Coffee Week programme, and visitors from abroad who came to Kossuth Square for the Parliament and stayed for the party. We pushed the tables together, the yellow tram jingled past behind us, and somehow everyone knew someone who knew someone.

There was a camera too
So we’re not the only ones who remember it: the first hour of the afternoon was recorded by Budapest Podcast Studio with professional cameras set up in front of the DJ booth.
